Liposuction – A good anti wrinkle technique?

Liposuction involves the suctioning of fat out of the body and is quite commonly used for anti aging wrinkle improvement. Cosmetic surgeons who perform liposuction use a long, hollow, metal tube called a cannula. Cannulas come in different sizes and shapes to allow surgeons to remove fat from different parts of the body. Longer ones are used for fat around the thighs and abdomen, while shorter ones are more in vogue for facial work. Some cannulas are curved. The cannulas are connected to a special vacuum that sucks out the fat particles that have been loosened up. Most recently, several cosmetic surgeons have advocated using a large syringe with a cannula on the end to remove the fat. When performing this procedure, some physicians use a general anesthetic while others use only local anesthesia. Certain doctors prefer to have their patients completely knocked out by the anesthesia so that they feel no pain. Others choose to give a series of local numbing shots so that their patients can be awake during the procedure. The patient who is not asleep is able to respond to requests to change positions, which can sometimes be of help in the procedure. But either way-awake or asleep-is perfectly acceptable.

The liposuction starts with an incision in the wrinkled or fatty area of the skin. The cut is usually very small-just big enough for the cannula to fit in. The cannula is then pushed into the fatty layer of the body. When in place, the cannula is pushed back and forth. This serves to break up the fatty tissue. At the same time that the fat is being broken up, it is being sucked out of the body by the vacuum. An expert cosmetic surgeon can make a very good estimate as to how much fat to remove to achieve the desired effect.

Along with the fat, a certain amount of blood and body fluids will be removed. The area that has just been treated is taped heavily. This prevents further bleeding and helps give a firm and natural contour to the skin. The tape is removed in about a week.

Part of the question as to which anesthetic to use has to do with the issue of safety. The disadvantage of using general anesthesia is that there is always some risk of complications from general anesthesia. Potential candidates are always screened for any medical problems before general anesthesia is used. Local anesthesia offers the advantage of not having to undergo the risks of
general anesthesia. Also, the local anesthesia can be done in the doctor’s office, while general anesthesia is almost always done in the hospital. However, the local anesthesia method is somewhat
painful while the numbing medicine is being injected.

The results of liposuction speak for themselves. This procedure, almost unknown fifteen years ago, has achieved skyrocketing popularity. Hips can have wrinkles smoothed, abdomens can be flattened, double chins become single again. There are many anti aging benefits to this technique. The number one area that women request having done is the hip/buttock area. Fat can be removed from any part of the body, including behind the knee, above the knee, and on the leg. Liposuction can also be performed on select areas of the face, such as the cheeks or jowls. However, small scars may occur at the site where the incision was made.

How long do these results of this procedure last? That’s a good question. Since liposuction is still in its infancy, we do not have any long-term follow-up studies. But the fat does seem to stay away for at least a few years. Does fat regrow faster in the buttocks than under an aging chin? Another good question. Only time will answer that one.
